The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), in collaboration with the Egyptian Radio and TV Union (ERTU) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Germany, hosted a one-day workshop on 'Transition to Digital Broadcast in Egypt' on Jan 29, 2009.
Transition to digital broadcast is a very important milestone in the ICT sector development process in Egypt. Its advantages are numerous and include sparing more frequencies, spawning new business models, and offering the end-user a suite of new features and services. Yet, such a transition poses many challenges from both the technical and business perspectives.
The main aim of this workshop is to bring the major stakeholders of this transition together on the same table to assess the current market status, and identify both challenges and opportunities, all in the effort to pave the road to a smooth and viable transition to digital broadcast in Egypt.
This event is part of a larger project on 'Evolution of Digital Broadcast Services in Egypt', which is sponsored by NTRA and implemented in partnership with ERTU. We are currently in the first phase of the project, and a consultation study is being carried out by Fraunhofer IIS in partnership with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS).
